Giving Thanks for Thanksgiving!

We were so excited to arrive at Stevens on Thursday morning and to see a large group of international students waiting for their transportation that would take them to an American home to celebrate the holiday.  We had almost 30 students altogether in 8 homes.  People walking by as we were picking them up stopped us to ask what was happening.
These students tried everything! Even cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.  Our student especially liked the gravy.
One student arrived too late for the transportation but really wanted the experience.  He got on his bicycle in Jersey City and biked 3-1/2 hours to Hawthorne.  When he arrived, he had no phone, but had wifi and contacted someone who gave him our number.  We picked him up and brought him home.  He was so excited - but mostly thirsty - he drank 3 glasses of water before he would sit down.
The most fun of having these students is their interaction with the members of the family.  We have done this for two years and the students love talking with my grandchildren and will join them in a game or a craft.
Hosting students for a special meal or activity is such an easy way to reach out - not doing anything extra, just including a student in something your family is already doing.  Want to get involved next year?  Contact me.
