As I was growing up, I heard amazing stories from missionaries serving the Lord from such exotic places as Japan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, etc. My husband and I were accepted as missionaries shortly after getting married and were excited about what the Lord would accomplish through us in Ecuador. We have been back from the mission field for many years but have felt God's calling to reach out to the unreached. Were we prepared to travel away from family again, learn a completely new language, learn different cultures and food? Maybe - but we found we didn't have to do those things. Almost one million international students from exotic locations around the world will be coming to the US this year to study. The majority of these students are from China and India. They need and want to learn English! They want to learn about what "American" means. For many, they have freedom to explore new ideas for the first time.
ISI offers so many opportunities to reach out to these students. At Hawthorne Gospel Church we have formed a ministry team to reach out to the students at Stevens Institute of Technology. Our team has reached out to these students by inviting them into our homes for holidays and weekends, helping with conversational English, planning game days at the church as well as other activities. We also take food to Stevens on Friday evenings and serve as facilitators for the weekly Bible studies.
As a City Mobilizer I would like to help other churches form teams and reach universities in their area. I will train in English Conversation techniques and resources, helping connect your church with the international community at the college and train your team in being "Friendship Partners" to these guests. I will add information here and am glad to answer your questions. It is exciting as we see these students being in a Bible study on Friday nights and then attend church regularly on Sundays, accept the Lord and get baptized. Why not join us in this great missionary adventure!
